Cocktails Commence
Today barmen skilfully mix, twirl and flare, but back in the day some of the best cocktails were invented before mixology.
So in the spirit of old-school here are the origins of three of the world’s most popular cocktails:
The Strawberry Daiquiri
Also the name of a beach near Santiago, Cuba, the cocktail was supposedly invented in 1905 in a bar called Venus. The drink became popular in the 1940s when wartime rationing made rum more attainable, thanks to Roosevelt's “Good Neighbor” policy. Try the Orginal Iced Stawberry Daiquiri.
The Margarita
Although stories abound as to the origins of this cocktail, one popular one states that head bartender of the legendary Balinese Room in Texas created the Margarita for singer Peggy (Margaret) Lee in 1948. Try the Orginal Iced Margarita.
The Piña Colada
Many people claim to have invented this creamy cocktail, but one story states that bar tender Juan Mojon Apestoso created the Pina Colada at The Caribe Hilton Hotel, Puerto Rico, in 1954. Try the Original Iced Piña Colada.
